Hello KHS Community,
As we move toward the close of the semester, I want to share a few important updates and celebrate some positive additions to our school community. Final exams will take place on Thursday, January 15, and Friday, January 16. Both days will be half days for students, with dismissal at 10:50 a.m. To support our students as they head out, bag lunches will be provided upon dismissal on both exam days. Report Cards will be mailed home on Monday, 1/26.
To help students prepare, we are offering after-school exam study sessions on Tuesday, January 13, and Wednesday, January 14, from 2:30–4:00 p.m. Students should be sure to sign up to attend, as pizza will be provided (sign up here). In addition, our Lunch & Study support is available during all lunch periods, giving students multiple opportunities to ask questions and strengthen their understanding before exams.
We are also excited to welcome three outstanding educators to Kearsley High School. Mrs. Taylor Wright is joining our Counseling Team. She is coming to us from Armstrong Middle School, and she will be stepping into the role previously held by Ms. Dailey, who recently retired. Additionally, Mr. Dan Hewitt is joining our Math Department, taking over for Ms. Riley, who also retired. Finally, Ms. Shaw will be joining our Special Education department, taking over the responsibilities that Mr. Hewitt had during the first semester. We are grateful for the contributions of Ms. Dailey and Ms. Riley, and we are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Wright, Ms. Shaw, and Mr. Hewitt to the Hornet family.
As we officially wrap up the semester, please note that there will be no school for students on Monday, January 19, and Tuesday, January 20. Thank you for your continued support of Kearsley High School. We appreciate our strong partnership with families and the community as we work together to support student success. Go Hornets! Dr. Ersig

Kearsley High School Profile of a Graduate |
At Kearsley High School, we are committed to preparing students not only for graduation, but for success beyond high school, no matter the pathway they choose. This year, KHS has developed a Profile of a Graduate, a shared set of skills and traits that define what it means to be a successful Kearsley graduate.
These skills and traits were developed collaboratively, using input from both teachers and students, and reflect the competencies students need to thrive in college, careers, the military, and life. They emphasize growth areas such as communication, problem-solving, resilience, integrity, collaboration, and independence—skills that matter in every future pathway.
To intentionally support this work, KHS will highlight and focus on these traits each month through structured opportunities for student reflection and engagement.
Beginning later this month, students will participate in homeroom meetings twice per month using a deviation schedule. These homerooms will be 20 minutes in length and will utilize our district-led initiative, Circles, to help students: -Engage in meaningful conversations
-Build relationships -Reflect on their growth -Develop the Profile of a Graduate traits in a supportive setting
Students will receive an email to their school email account with their assigned homeroom teacher and room number prior to the first session. 📅 Our first homeroom will take place on Wednesday, January 28.
We are excited to partner with families in this important work and look forward to supporting our students as they grow into confident, capable, and well-rounded Kearsley graduates. |

Hello Kearsley Hornets. My name is Taylor Wright. I am excited to begin a new chapter in my counseling career with all of you at Kearsley High School. I have been at Armstrong Middle School for the last 4 and half years as a school counselor. Before my time at Kearsley, I worked as an Assistant Dean of Students in Salem, MA and have 8 years of experience as a middle school science teacher in various school districts. I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI and Adams State University in Alamosa, CO. I look forward to meeting or reconnecting with all of you.

I am in my second year working at Kearsley High School. In my free time I love to spend time with my wife, Angie, travel (I want to visit every continent), spend time outdoors, and play golf. I also like to talk about music, sports, and tv. I can’t wait to get started and I am looking forward to having you in my class this year! Let’s have a great rest of the school year! |

Kari Shaw, a 1981 KHS grad, taught English here for 34 years. She taught all levels from at-risk students to AP Literature and Composition. She was also the yearbook adviser for her entire career and department chair for 30 years. Since retirement she has enjoyed reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family (both her sons are also KHS grads) as well as her two yorkies. |

Research is clear—when students attend school regularly, they succeed! At KHS, we want every Hornet to have the best chance to learn and grow.
Here’s what you need to know about our attendance policy: - 9 absences per semester are allowed (excused or unexcused)
- If a student reaches 10 or 11 absences in a class, they’ll need to make up time by attending: Why it matters: Attendance isn’t just about grades—it’s about experiences! Students must be present to participate in extracurricular activities after school.
Dance Policy: To encourage strong attendance and good behavior, students with more than 9 absences or a Level 5 (or higher) discipline referral won’t be eligible to attend dances in the following semester. |

Backpacks, Lockers & Cell Phones – What You Need to Know! |
Safety and learning come first at KHS! Lockers: Every Hornet is assigned a locker for the year—your personal space to stay organized and prepared. Backpacks: Backpacks are welcome on campus, but they must be stored in lockers during the school day. This keeps classrooms safe and gives everyone more room to learn!
Cell Phones: To help students stay focused and engaged, cell phones should remain in lockers during class. Don’t worry—you’ll have access during passing times and lunch to stay connected. By following these guidelines, we’re building responsibility and creating an environment where every Hornet can thrive! Thank you for your support |

Join Our Hornet Volunteer Team! |
Kearsley High School truly values the time, energy, and care our parent volunteers bring to our community! Throughout the school year, there will be many opportunities to help with school-wide events, classroom activities, and extracurricular programs.
To keep our students safe, all volunteers are required to complete a “Volunteer Screening Form” for EACH event, field trip, party, or sports/activity season you plan to volunteer for. Your involvement makes a big difference in creating the best experience for our Hornets—thank you for partnering with us!
Visit the KCS Volunteer Page to learn more and access the form. Please allow up to 4 business days for processing. |
